A Level results day worries, concerns and where to look for support:

The last few years have been very difficult for students, with Covid not only affecting their education but also their mental health. Sitting public examinations this summer, without having experienced GCSE examinations has been a scary experience for many. With A Level results coming out tomorrow (18/08/22) some students find today a difficult one.

Are you worrying that you may not get the results you hoped for and what this could mean for your university or college course?

Are you worrying about what you will tell your parents or carers and friends?

There are some things you can do to help with this uncertainty:

  • Make sure you know what the process is for getting your results. Many schools and colleges will be emailing results early tomorrow morning. If they have not informed you of the process, contact them today to check. If you are abroad, think about the time difference in terms of when you can expect your results to arrive in your inbox.

  • If your school/college expect you to attend in person, find out what time they will be open and plan your journey (especially important if you are going to be affected by train strikes).

  • Make a plan for tomorrow – do you want to know your results as soon as possible in case you need to make changes to your university/college plans? In this case, get up early! Or maybe you have decide to take a year out and can spend a bit more time thinking about where you want to go from here with your education.

Schools and colleges will have a support system in place to help you tomorrow – they will have experienced staff to advise you on your next step, whether this is supporting you with a change in course because you have exceeded your entry requirements, or finding an alternative course if you have not met your requirements.

Tomorrow morning, if you have applied for university, log into your UCAS Hub. If you have met the grade offer for your course, you will see a change against the university you have chosen from ‘conditional’ to ‘unconditional’ – accept this, you’re in, go and celebrate!

If you haven’t met the terms of your offer but you are close (for example, one grade away in one subject), again look at your UCAS Hub and check whether your university has decided to offer you a place. If so your offer will change from ‘conditional’ to ‘unconditional’ –accept this, you’re in, go and celebrate!

If you haven’t met your offer and haven’t been offered a place, all is not lost. If you would still like to go to university, you can apply through Clearing for any remaining places. This may be on the course you had originally chosen but at a different university, or a different course at the same or different university. This is your Plan B.

Plan B: The UCAS Clearing system opens at 08.15 UK time on the 18th August. This will list all the course with places available. Identify courses you think will be right for you and ring the university admissions department immediately. The universities with places in Clearing will have a team of staff ready to take your call from around 8am but places will go fast.

However, before you can be accepted on an alternative course, you need to reject any other offers you hold, for example you may have an insurance offer and may have been accepted on that.

Talk to your parents or teachers first to make sure you are making the right decision and then reject the offer. It can take a few hours for the university to 'release' you from the offer and you cannot accept an alternative offer in Clearing until you have been released.

Your school or college will be able to advise you about the Clearing process but if you would like any further advice or support, ring or email us at Kensington Tutors. Sometimes if you don’t get the results you hoped for, it feels like the end of the world. This is normal and these feelings will pass. Or maybe you are just unclear about your next steps and would like some advice. We are here to give impartial support and advice on your next steps and help you come up with your Plan B.

Good luck for tomorrow and your next steps in your life journey!
