Changes to GCSE and A Levels in 2022

2022 is a "transition year” for GCSE and A levels with an aim to "maximize fairness". In essence Ofqual are moving back towards the grading before examinations were cancelled due to COVID in 2020 and 2021, meaning that this years results will be receiving grades less generously than summer 2021, before returning to pre-COVID levels in 2023. The Chief Regulator of Ofqual has stated that “We want to get back quickly to the pre-pandemic standard, but in the interests of fairness, and balancing these objectives, we won’t do so in one jump.”

Subjects will also have differences. Choice of topics will be allowed, allowing teachers and pupils to ensure they are prepared for their examinations, although this can have its own issues, and other subjects will have aids, such as equation sheets. Guidance will be released in February 2022. Some changes are highlighted below.

  • grade boundaries between 2019 and 2021 levels

  • topic choices in GCSE English literature, history, geography

  • notice of topics to revise in February 2022

  • formulae and equation sheets in mathematics and science

Furthermore, consultations are to take place with schools on teacher assessed grades should the examinations be cancelled in 2022. The full plans for the 2022 examination series can be found here.
