Study in the UK

Despite Brexit and despite Covid, the UK is still considered a great place to come to university.

For one thing, compared to the USA, an undergraduate degree is considerably cheaper. For example, an economics degree at LSE (London School of Economics) will cost an International student approximately £99,690 for tuition fees plus living costs, over the course of the degree. At Harvard in the US, an economics degree will work out at approximately £188,100. For both these calculations, nine months of living expense have been included. In part this is because the undergraduate degree courses in the UK last for 3 years, while in the US they last for 4 years.

Another advantage is that the UK have introduced the two year post-study work visa to encourage students to stay and look for work within the UK, regardless of the degree they have studied. In the US, students can apply for a one year extension to their visa to work in a field related to their degree. This is considered to be practical training for their chosen area of work. If they have studies a STEM subject it can be possible to have a two year extension, but only to work in a STEM related field.

A third advantage is the quality of teaching. As can be seen from the World Rankings below, the top ranked UK universities are all part of what is collectively known as the Russell Group. This group of 24 prestigious universities have become known for the quality of their teaching and research, with entry being highly competitive. They are able to successfully bid for the majority of research funding available both from the UK Research Council and UK charities, which allows them to recruit the world’s best staff and they have a very low staff to student ratio (an average of seven students to one member of staff).
